THE RESILIENT DIRECTOR AND BOARD
The Resilient Director and Board - How to manage Stress and drive Success
“We are coming to understand health not as the absence of disease, but rather as the process by which individuals maintain their sense of coherence (i.e. sense that life is comprehensible, manageable, and meaningful) and ability to function in the face of changes in themselves and their relationships with their environment”
- Aaron Antonovsky – ‘Health, Stress and Coping’
Brief summary
Antonio Horta-Osorio, Chief Executive of Lloyds Banking Group, at the end of 2011 (coincidentally on Stress Awareness Day), announced that he had taken leave due to ‘stress and extreme fatigue’. Back at work he says he is ‘aiming for a more balanced lifestyle’.
It’s not surprising that research published in the British Medical Journal has concluded that workplace stress is as deleterious to health as smoking and sedentary lifestyle behaviours. Stress Leave has recently become the single biggest Worker’s Compensation cost to organisations in Australia.
Stress needs to be addressed from the leadership level, as it’s often a cultural issue. Performing at a high level and being able to manage stress and anxiety in others and in oneself is an important part of the skill-set of an executive in today’s challenging Corporate environment.
Organisational Stress, “is the harmful physical and emotional responses that can happen when there is conflict between job demands on the employee AND the amount of control an employee has over meeting those demands.” – N.I.O.S.H
